VARIETAL

Tempranillo

Tempranillo is a native of Spain and was brought to America, possibly as seeds, with the Spanish Conquistadors in the 17th century. Its name is a derivative of a Spanish word meaning early, by virtue of its ability to ripen two weeks earlier than most other Spanish varietals. In California, this varietal is sparsely planted and rarely produced as a single varietal, which makes it a perfect varietal to add to our portfolio.

VARIETAL

Teroldego

Teroldego is an Italian varietal that is grown primarily in Northern Italy, and considered extremely rare outside of that region. Teroldego makes a wine that is full bodied with dark black fruit.  Its aromas are accentuated with spice and blackberries.

VARIETAL

Lagrein

Lagrein is a little known red wine varietal native to northwestern Italy’s Trentino region. Relatively rare, even in Italy, in California it is almost non-existent: fewer than 100
producing acres are currently planted. In Italy, Lagrein is made both as a rose and a red wine and both are considered two of Trentino’s best local specialty wines. Generally, Lagrein produces darkly colored red wines which are fruity in flavor and not as heavy as their color suggests they might be.

VARIETAL

Grenache

Grenache may have originated in Spain, probably in Aragon or Catalonia, but has since spread over the Pyrenees into southern France and the rest of the Mediterranean.

VARIETAL

Sangiovese

The Sangiovese grape is an ancient varietal indigenous to the Tuscany region of Italy. It is Italy’s most planted grape variety and the base for Chianti, Vino Nobile di
Montepulciano and most of the Super Tuscans.

VARIETAL

Riesling

Riesling is a very expressive grape, elegantly capturing the characteristics of our Upper Ridge Vineyard high on Pine Mountain. Riesling seems to offer us both the beautiful floral aromas of a Viognier and the bright, crisp structure of a Sauvignon Blanc. Add a fresh element of minerality all its own and the resulting wine is simply, artful.

VARIETAL

Muscat

The Muscat family of grapes include over 200 grape varieties belonging to the Vitis vinifera species that have been used in wine production and as raisin and table grapes around the globe for many centuries. One common trait that can be seen in most all Muscat members is the characteristic floral, “grapey” aroma note that is caused by the high concentration of monoterpenes in the grapes.

VARIETAL

Barbera

A dynamic and versatile grape variety, Barbera is referred to as the “people’s wine” in its native Piedmont region. It is known, in particular, for its deep ruby color, full body and approachable tannins.

VARIETAL

Sauvignon Blanc

Believed to be one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc is native to the Bordeaux region. The grape most likely gets its name from the French words sauvage (“wild”) and blanc (“white”) due to its early origins as an indigenous grape in South West France. It is possibly a descendant of Savagnin. Sauvignon blanc is planted in many of the world’s wine regions, producing a crisp, dry, and refreshing white varietal wine.

VARIETAL

Tannat

Grown on the border of France and Spain, in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains, Tannat is the national grape of Uruguay. The secret to making a good Tannat is to tame the tannins; after all, Tanant is derived from the word tannin which is the compound in the thick skins and seeds of this grape that give the wine its complexity and mouthfeel.

VARIETAL

Malbec

Another one of the classic red Bordeaux grapes, Malbec is an early ripener that yields soft wines of low acidity, moderate tannins, good color and fruit flavors reminiscent of blueberries.

the off-beaten path

"Off-the-beaten path" is an understatement for our Upper Ridge Vineyard, located at the top of Pine Mountain. Still, we make the trek because we love the quality of fruit created by its unique terrior, elevation (one of the highest in Sonoma County) and exposure. The best part? You can grow almost any varietal here - and we do! 11 unique wine varietals on one special vineyard. Use the below map to explore some of the varietals at Upper Ridge, then get down here and taste 'em! You won't be disappointed.
