Vintage
The 1999 vintage was characterized as cool and dry. We had good
weather for bud-break and bloom that helped insure a good set but
the season was off to a late start. Generally this is good for quality
but if it goes to late we run out of time for the bigger varietals
to fully ripen. This was not the case with our Viognier. Our Viognier
comes from the northern part of Alexander Valley, which warmed up
nicely as we moved through the season. The 1999 vintage finished
with long hot days and warm evenings allowing the fruit to reach
its full maturity.
Vinification
Viognier needs to be handled with care during the winemaking process,
from start to finish. The delicate floral juice of Viognier is surrounded
by an astringent skin, which can cause the wine to be bitter. We
use only the free run juice to preserve the wines beautiful delicacy.
Cold barrel fermentation in older French oak barrels to maintain
the delicate flavors during fermentation and five months of oak
aging to add roundness and richness to the mouth feel of the wine.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of fresh peach and grapefruit lead to flavors of peach pie,
pink grapefruit and a finish noted for its crispness.
