Vintage
1998 was, for the most part, a very late and very wet growing season, culminating in a gloriously warm autumn. Significant culling was undertaken to rid the vineyards of damaged fruit. The combination of smaller crops and higher acids produced grapes with wonderful balance and fruit intensity.

Vinification
Both the Rancho Salina (Oct 12) and the Benziger Estate (October 14) lots were harvested within a few days of one another. The fermentation took place in tank and lasted between 7-12 days. After pressing, the wines were racked to American and French oak and aged for 18 months. Blending took place in spring of 2000 and the wine was bottled unfiltered on May 16, 2000. TA 6.13, pH 3.45, RS .03, Alc 13.8%. Case production: 637.

Tasting Notes
This wine offers perfumed aromas of cherries, plums, vanilla and spice. Bright cherry, cinnamon and spice flavors give way to a smooth, rich finish. Pair this with your favorite red pasta sauce or light meat dishes.
