About This Wine
The famed French ampelographer Pierre Galet asserts that it is a descendant of Durif, a nearly extinct French varietal. DNA testing of California Petite Sirah of the early 1990s suggested it was actually related to the famed Rhone varietal Syrah. It’s known for its substantial tannins and deep color. Though often used in blends to shore up softer, paler red wines, it has garnered a strong cult following for its dark character and magnificent ageability.
Wine Profile
Vintage: 2010
Appellation: Paso Robles
Acid: .61
PH: 3.79
Alcohol %: 14.9
Tasting Notes: This Petite Sirah has jammy dark fruit aromas that play off hints of pepper and herbs. Its concentrated mulberry hue alerts the palate to its impending blackberry, black cherry and blueberry flavors. Dark cocoa, fig and white pepper balance the fruit and lead to a savory finish without rough edges. Pair this wine with Korean Short Ribs or a bowl full of spicy chili. Cellar from 6-8 years.
Vineyard Notes: The Petite Sirah for this wine is sourced from the Shell Creek Vineyard, which is owned by the Sinton Family, whom we’ve had a special relationship with for over 26 years.
Production Notes: Strict tannin management is a must with Petite Sirah. The grapes were cold soaked prior to fermentation and spent around 12 days on the skins. The grapes were lightly pressed to maintain a delicate balance between flavors, color and tannins. The wine spent 18 months in 30% new French oak before being bottled in March 2012.

Other Notes:

2010 was a year of lower than normal precipitation and cooler temperatures, allowing longer hang times, and became an ideal growing season for Pinot Noir. We received an accelerating heat spell late August that helped to develop fruit sugars, and fortunately September allowed for extended hang time for the flavors to catch up. label art by: Hilary Brace, Santa Barbara, CA
