Varietal
The Sangiovese grape is an ancient varietal indigenous to the Tuscany
region of Italy. It is Italyâs most planted grape variety
and the base for Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and most
of the Super Tuscans. With the advent of Super Tuscan popularity
in California in the late 80âs and early 90âs, plantings
of Sangiovese have increased substantially. Sangiovese is known
for its strong tannins and sturdy structure.
Vintage
Vintage 2001 saw the return of a warmer, earlier season following
three vintages in a row noted for their coolness. Bloom enjoyed
nearly perfect conditions for fruit set followed by a long, warm
summer.
Vinification
The lot for this wine was fermented individually in a small stainless
steel fermenter for 15 days. The high skin to juice ratio allowed
us to extract maximum flavor from the grapes, while managing good
tannin levels. The wine was aged for 18 months in new and older
American oak barrels and bottled on June 25, 2003. Alcohol 14.5%,
Total acidity .61, pH 3.65, Residual sugar 0.06%.
Tasting Notes
This Sangiovese is a supple, full-bodied wine, with a hint of crispness,
and plum, cherry, and toasted oak flavors. Enjoy with favorites
including pasta in tomato sauce, pizza, meatloaf and rabbit with
onions.
