Varietal
Riesling is the great vine variety of Germany, considered by many to be among the finest white wines in the world. Typically bone dry in Germany, the California Rieslings tend to be sweeter in style with the best examples grown in the cooler parts of Santa Barbara, Monterey and Mendocino.

Vintage
Record warm weather, followed by a heat spell during June pushed vintage 2000 ahead of schedule by three weeks. As an early ripener, Viognier was one of the first grapes harvested on August 24th. The grapes for this wine are from Cole Ranch in Mendocino where extended growing days balance with the cooler temperatures to produce a fully flavored Riesling with vivid varietal aromas and flavors. In 2000, we were pleased with the yield of well-ripened and well-balanced fruit. We used press clippings to maintain low ph and ensure crispness.

Vinification
Riesling needs to be handled with care during the winemaking process, from start to finish. We used single lot fermentations to maintain distinctive floral flavors. The wine was bottled early to retain the fresh fruity character. Alc 11.5%, Total acidity .64, pH 3.08, Residual sugar 4.5%.

Tasting Notes
Aromas of fresh flowers and honey lead to melon flavors highlighted by a spritzy-sweetness. The finish is noted for its crispness.
