Varietal
Malbec, one of the classic red Bordeaux grapes, is an early ripener
that yields soft wines of low acidity, moderate tannins, good color
and fruit flavors reminiscent of blueberries. Malbec’s popularity
continues to grow as enthusiasts discover its lushness and age ability.
Vintage
The growing season of 2000 began with the warmest winter on record,
which gave way to a very warm spring punctuated by a record heat
spell in mid June. The relatively warm weather moved us two to three
weeks ahead of schedule. A more temperate summer followed, allowing
the grapes to ripen evenly. The long, drawn out harvest yielded
extremely high quality fruit giving us wine with tremendous body
and texture.
Vinification
Malbec from both vineyards was fermented in small bins and punched
down by hand. The wines were pressed at dryness and then placed
in a combination of 2 and 3 year old French oak barrels for 15 months.
The final wine was blended and bottled, unfiltered in May of 2002.
Alcohol 13.4%, TA .58, pH 3.66, Residual sugar .02.
Tasting Notes
A blend of eminent vineyards, this Malbec is rich and concentrated,
a powerful, moderately tannic wine with exotic flavors reminiscent
of plum, blueberry jam, black peppercorn, spicy oak and tobacco.
Serve with beef stew, beef Wellington, roast duck or veal scallopine.
